5 hospitalized after Houston
A walkway collapse in Texas City led to multiple hospitalizations Thursday, authorities say.
At least five people were hospitalized Thursday afternoon after an elevated walkway collapsed in Surfside Beach, a small town about 60 miles south of Houston, according to the Associated Press.
Five known victims were in helicopters bound for medical care and around 10 people in total were injured in the collapse, Surfside Beach Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Justin Mills told the Associated Press. Mills said the conditions of the victims were unknown and that he didn't know the age of the victims but that some looked like teenagers, according to the Associated Press.
The Surfside Beach Fire Department responded to a 12:34 p.m. call reporting the collapse and set up a landing zone for hospital helicopters nearby, Mills told the Associated Press.
Video captured by ABC 13 shows that the walkway leads from the beach to a yellow building raised several feet off the ground on wooden beams. A bystander told ABC 13 that they saw around six ambulances arrive on the scene shortly after the collapse.
